30 March 2020 – Day 4

It is another gloomy, overcast, autumn day. The wind is blowing, making it rather cool outside, so we had breakfast indoors.

A second SA death occurred, and our reported number of cases had increased by 93. The first township cases were reported; my worst fear. We are being bombarded by information and I find myself flip-flopping between two extremes: 1. It is worse than anything we have ever seen before, and 2. The world is overreacting; it is just another flu and should be allowed to run its course…

I guess we will just have to wait and see how this all pans out. At least President Cyril Ramaphosa did us proud! And I am continually impressed by our Minister of Health, Zweli Mkhize. He comes across as calm and well informed and instils confidence.

Wearing a mask has suddenly come into the spotlight again. It was initially emphasised that it was not the right thing to do due to a heightened risk of infection due to constantly touching one’s face, etc. Now, it seems that it was a deliberate effort by the World Health Organisation to prevent panic buying of masks and leaving a shortage for the health industry as a result. It is actually very desirable to wear a mask as this prevents the wearer from spreading droplets and also protects the wearer from others’ droplets. Not fool proof but at least a smaller risk of contracting the virus while out shopping for essentials.

Tomorrow is our wedding anniversary, so we scanned our cookery books and decided on a menu consisting of dishes we’ve never made before:

Starter: Broccoli & Avocado Salad with roasted Almond dressing

Main:    Pumpkin Gnocchi with Bacon & Sage cream

Desert: Tiramisu

Wine:    Stellar Organics Chardonnay Pinot Noir (sparkling)

              Lancerac Cabernet Sauvignon 2001

The tiramisu calls for rum which we happened to have thanks to a recent ‘thank you’ gift from Valery Yiptong. She is the owner of unit 17 in our complex, currently resident in Colombia.

Roger went to the shops to buy the few items we did not have in our pantry. I don’t think he minds. It provides some exercise and a change of scenery.

We made the desert, and the bubbly is on ice. We will make it an occasion to remember.
