After much organisation, planning, packing, re-packing, phaffing and the like we were eventually on our way on Friday the 4th. Even now all is not done! First stop in Pretoria at the Parks Board to collect our Wild Card, then stop in at Modimolle (Nylstroom) to collect Letitia’s truck (code 10) license. Eventually we are heading towards our destination: Nylsvley, part of the Nyl Floodplain IBA and Ramsar site.
After considerable assessing and maneuverering of the ‘train’ we eventually got ourselves parked and could start relaxing. A braai, glass of wine and an early night was called for.
The next day we were able to assess the damage done by the recent fire that devastated the Nyl floodplain. What a sad sight to see the Jacana Hide destroyed.
What was heartening is the fact that there is already regrowth after only ten days.
Fortunately there are still large areas of vegetation that escaped the fire and the Sable and other antelope populations seemed to be in good health. Happily, the night after we left they had 37mm of rain. For more information about Nylsvley go to www.nylsvley.co.za. Also Malissa Whitecross is doing some research at Nylsvley and is running a blog on observations as the reserve recovers nylsvleyrisingfromtheashes.wordpress.com
trip looks awesome ,see the trailer is coming in handy .
enjoy and travel safe .
Hi Marc. The trailer has stood the test so far. Did very well on the mountain pass. However, one of the car attachment points is showing signs of tearing loose. Roger
What about a map and showing the route you took .
What happened to the airoplane is it folded up and store in a box on the trian.
Hi Rinette. We will update our itenerary page as we go. Being a bit lazy, I must admit. The aeroplane is in Rustenburg. It cannot be folded up so when there is a need Roger will fetch it. Letitia
