Going Home

Can you believe it? When we started it was hard to envisage the end; it seemed as if our trip would be for ever. Now a year has passed and it is the end. But let me be quick to add: the end of this trip; we plan to have many more in future…
On Friday the 18th we travelled from Kimberley to Bloemhof and checked in at the Sandveld Nature Reserve, an IBA, on the banks of the Bloemhof dam. We had time for a short drive into the reserve and were amazed and surprised at the number of animal species we encountered; quite impressive for a one-hour drive. The weather was rather cold and windy so an early night was called for.

The next day we travelled to the Rustenburg district via Klerkdorp, Ventersdorp and Derby and arrived at Eugene and Marlene’s plot in the late afternoon. There we had a lovely evening catching up on news of the past year over a drink and a braai. As always we slept in Ufudu. The next morning they took us to visit their neighbour, Petra Rough, who does animal rescue and rehabilitation, especially of predators. I really take my hat off to people who are so dedicated; it is a 24/7 job!

André was brave enough to hold one of the youngsters but of course one can't be scared of a Caracul if you have already been attacked by a lion!

Next we stopped at Francois and Adri’s plot, together with Eugene and Marlene, where we continued the catch-up. It was good to see everyone again and we had a lot of fun and laughter during the evening, besides the good food and wine. It was our last night in Ufudu, for this trip anyway…

We got home in the afternoon on Sunday the 21st September, happy to be home and at the same time sad that it is all over…
Thanks to all our family and friends, old and new, for your feedback and encouragement. It made it so much more meaningful to maintain the blog. We intend making another post in a few weeks’ time to reflect on our trip so don’t go away just yet!
