False Bay Camp

We were up early on Monday the 6th in order to get everything packed and ready to leave Phinda. We were in the same spot for 12 days so one tends to spread out a bit! We left the camp at 09h40 and were lucky enough to spot a European Honey Buzzard on the short stretch of road between the camp and the gate. Indeed a special sighting.

Our first stop was at the Wimpy for breakfast and after that the Hluhluwe Airport where Buzz received some TLC. He was washed and dried and covered up for the long stay until we decide where he will be flown to next. At least he will be under cover and therefore out of range of the pesky monkeys.

Next we replenished food stocks, followed by a quest to find a Laundromat (without success). We got to False Bay camp in the late afternoon. It is an Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife camp situated on the shores of Lake St Lucia. And yes, fishing is allowed!

With no Laundromat available we had to roll up our sleeves and get it done ourselves, so Tuesday morning was spent doing washing and general house-keeping.

Then we made the nasty discovery that our hiking gear, which was packed in the trailer box, got wet at some stage so that had to be unpacked and dried as well. Fortunately the weather played along and by late afternoon we could breathe deeply and look forward to the rest of our stay.

Since Buzz has stepped into the wings (so to speak!) Splash can now take over centre-stage.

The lake is beautiful and an early morning boat ride was the order of the day.

On the evening of the 2nd day Roger eventually managed to catch a fish.  I was forbidden to publish this (male ego?) but what the hell…

And as always, the resident wild life!

It was most amusing; the frog took a single leap from ground level and landed on Roger’s shoulder, from where it leaped onto the picture of the wetland!

The camp was very quiet, in fact there was only one other campsite occupied besides ourselves. Roger had long chats with Rudi and Gerrie. Rudi gave him lots of pointers of where to go and what to do along our route further up the coast. He also kindly supplied an anchor for Splash.

False Bay Camp is a tranquil place where one can just chill.

After 3 nights it was pack up and go again; next stop Kosi Bay.

  1. Hi Letitia and Roger. Your False Bay experience sounds wonderful but hey Rog, you just have to land a bigger one than that! 🙂
